When you are in high school you can be a little disconnected to what college is and what it has to offer you in the real world. The choice of a major is an important choice because when you get into the field, you would have wasted four or more years of college to be in a job you really don’t want to be in. That is why it is important to choice your major carefully before you even start college. Some students will go into college undecided and they scramble in their junior year trying to find a major they can complete. Don’t procrastinate like that. Choose now.

When looking to choose a major for college you have to think about what you are really passionate about. You have to love that subject up and down to really be able to go to a class about it for the next four years. For example, if you have had an array of classes in high school, think back to your favorite class. Not the class with the favorite teachers or the class where your friends were, but the class where you really got into the subject matter. You hung on to every word of the lecture and actually did the extra credit assignments. This may be the class for you to look at your major from.

With your major you also have to look at how much money you will make when you graduate college with that major. What jobs are out there and what specific jobs will you be qualified for? You not only have to look at the long range salary that you will receive, but what is the entry level position paying that you will make for several years. You probably have student loans to pay for, so that entry level position may not be able to give you a good living and allow you to pay your bills at the same time.

The student has to look at the direction that the field is going to and if the existing jobs now will be outdated. Technology is moving fast and so is the direction of most desirable fields that colleges educate for. For those who are looking at the computer field, the computer that you are trained to work on during college may be obsolete when you graduate. The student has to look at if they are going to have to go to extra classes outside of college just to keep up with the technology they are supposed to be familiar with.
