The internet has made looking for scholarships easy for students that need money for college. Simple search engines are available and with a click of the mouse, the student can apply for a plethora of loans. No longer does the student have to travel to the scholarship award location or wait on traditional mail to give the accepted or rejected letter. Scholarships can be located and a simple email can have the application to the awards committee in the blink of an eye.

This is great but how do you request scholarship information in the proper manner? A well written email will get a better response from the scholarship organization then just a quick note. You must personalize each request so that your name and your abilities are out there. Who is to say that the person receiving the email is not a judge that will review your application later? Any communication with the scholarship organization should be done with some semblance of professionalism.

Don’t just write an email; write a letter asking for the information. Also you need to ask for an application if one is not available online. The length and the information that the student places in the letter is important. Not only are the normal demographics required, but a short blurb about the student’s intentions may also be appropriate. Promote yourself but do not go into detail. Save the detail for the application and the interview process. Too much enthusiasm in the student’s letter may mark the student as overzealous.

The student needs to look for all the information they can find on the scholarship before making a phone call or writing a letter to ask for it. The more information the student finds out on their own, the more room and time will be left for information that was not found. The student needs to use their time wisely when dealing with scholarship committees. There should be more than one scholarship application going on and all the opportunities need equal time.

If the student is turned down for a scholarship or the scholarship is discontinued, they should not hold a grudge. The student should graciously accept defeat and move on to the next scholarship. The student should not burn any bridges because the scholarship may come back into service or the scholarship committee may be responsible for more than one reward. The student needs to keep their options open.
