If you find an organization that is offering a scholarship that you think you may be qualified for, there are a few simple rules to remember when you request an application. This is the time to be polite and make sure that you don’t ruffle anyone’s feathers. Here are some tips on how to make the best impression when you are trying to apply for a scholarship.
1. Research the opportunity completely. Before you request your application, take the time to make sure that you fit all of the requirements. You’ll be saving everyone time by taking this step. If you think that you may qualify but you’re not sure, ask the organization for more information.
2. Always remember your manners. When phoning or contacting an organization for a scholarship, you will want to be on your best behavior. If you are calling them, make sure that it is during business hours and that you are extremely polite on the phone. You don’t need to come off like an unprofessional hack that doesn’t deserve their money. To put it into perspective, how would you like someone to ask you for money? If you are writing to request an application, keep it short and businesslike. Type up the request and steer clear of notebook paper. It doesn’t make a very good impression.
3. Follow up if necessary, but do it politely. If you do not receive your application within a reasonable amount of time, usually 2-3 weeks, you may need to contact the organization again. If this happens, do not get rude with them. Be very polite and explain your problem. It is possible that it may have gotten lost in the mail. Don’t lose your temper or get verbally abusive. Remember, it’s a lot easier to say no than it is to say yes.
4. Make sure you understand the application. Once you do receive your application, read it through completely at least twice. If there are any areas that you do not understand, contact the organization for more information. Again, be polite and try not to push. You will be saving them time and energy by turning in the right information, but you don’t want to irritate them.
People always remember extremes. If you are very rude, chances are they’ll never forget you. However, if you are very nice the same is also true.
