Scholarships Available in Utah

What are scholarship boards looking at when they review hundreds of applications? They are defiantly looking for that certain individual who stands out among the rest. A certain spark or shine that make them say, yep…that's the one we're looking for. This is basic for any scholarship or grant program, and the ones found in Utah are no different. They recognize that keeping those grades up in high school can be quite difficult, and look at those who not only managed to keep up good grades, but exceeded the normal expectations set my most schools. Utah offers two scholarship programs that are aimed at rewarding academic excellence.

There are two specific scholarships that award students for their efforts. The first is the Utah Centennial Scholarship. This award awards those who are so highly motivated in high school that they actually graduate early. So by getting ahead of the class, literally, you can earn up to $250 each quarter which can total as much as $1000 annually. This is definitely a chunk of change to those looking to jumpstart their academic career.

The second scholarship awarded is the New Century Scholarships. This scholarship is truly only for the highly motivated high school student. Yes, some actually exist that are willing to work hard for their future. This scholarship awards high school students that not only strive to finish high school early but who are also working on their Associates degree at the same time. Definitely a full work load for the average 17 year old. I'm sure that many football games are missed in order to achieve this sort of goal. Specific guidelines set for this award state that the student has to maintain a B average or higher, and has to finish the Associates degree before September 1 following their high school graduation. If an individual has the drive to take on this particular task successfully, they are then able to receive a 75% tuition scholarship to a Utah State college or University. That is huge!

There are also other awards such as the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). This allows Utah students a chance to study at other colleges in 15 states with the help of tuition assistance. This great since it offers local Utah students the chance of going away to college without the extreme cost normally associated with out of state tuition and boarding. It also allows students to pursue a career at a college that offer specific programs that are designated to the potential of certain careers which might not be local Utah colleges or universities.
