Who Qualifies for Minority Scholarships

When filling out scholarship applications don't overlook those that apply to minorities merely because you think that it doesn't apply to your circumstance. Who exactly is considered a minority? The answer to that question is pretty broad and not as simple. The minority list is not so clean cut anymore. Minorities are considered to be African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, Multi-racial, Multi-cultural, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Female. This list covers just about everyone anymore; there is definitely money waiting to be offered to those who seek it.

Almost every organization that offers a scholarship programs grants a certain allotment to minorities. There are especially scholarships available to those who plan to study in areas that are not normally attributed to minorities. These areas of study include science, math, engineering, law medicine and business. If an individual falls within the minority guidelines and doesn't look into these types of scholarships they could be forfeiting major funding.

The Hispanic and African-American population are probably the largest minority group in the United States. There are many scholarships aimed at these minority groups such as the United Negro College fund aimed at African Americans that finances millions of dollars in order to gain an education for deserving individuals. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is a wealth of information for Hispanics to look through and research. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund also draws millions of dollars in funding from various large corporations.

Since the United States has become a virtual melting pot of race, culture, and heritage there are many scholarships offered to those who meet that description. It doesn't hurt to do a search on interracial scholarships, multi-cultural, or even multi-ethnic scholarships. Asian and Native American students also make up a smaller minority population and also have specific scholarships offered in accordance to their ethnic backgrounds. For Asian students there are scholarships available such as the Bruce Lee scholarship, Jackie Chan scholarship, and the Telamon scholarship to name a few. For Native American students there are certain elements that can help qualify you for a scholarship such as tribal membership and DNA. There are so scholarships such as the Allogan Slagle Scholarship as well as federally funded tribal colleges and universities.
Certain populations of women are eligible for scholarship funds as well. These include minority women, women who are trying to finish their education after some sort of disruption, those trying to advance their careers, and those seeking a higher degree. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students have been recognized as a minority group and are now being offered scholarships by organizations such as the point foundation and the first Friday breakfast club scholarship.
