The Freshman Years: How to Prepare For College

It is never too early to start getting ready to attend college. Even freshman can benefit from creating a plan of action for their future. Here are some tips on what you can do to start getting ready for your college education.

1. Get involved in school and community activities. Whether it is the football team or the drama club, the more involved you are in your school, the better your chances are of being a desirable candidate for the college of your choice. Find an area that interests you and join a school organization. If you can’t find anything that suits your needs, get involved in your community by volunteering. The time you spend now will look really good on your application later.

2. Study hard. The best way to make sure that you will qualify for the college of your choice is by keeping a great grade average. Freshmen usually try the hardest at their grades, and it is a good idea to start study habits now that will carry you throughout your high school career. Don’t slack off in the middle of the year, keep going. It will pay off in the end.

3. Talk with your guidance counselor. Your school counselor will be able to help you start making a plan for your college education. This is a great time to explore what areas of study you are interested in. You can start matching up colleges that suit you and take your time to pick the best ones. This allows you the opportunity of visiting several colleges ahead of time to make sure that you are making the right choice.

4. Stay informed. One of the best ways to get higher scores on your entrance exams is by reading as much as possible. Find new books that challenge you or read the newspaper every day. The more you know, the better your chances are of getting a great score on your ACT test. Start reading college prep books and take sample exams to help you get prepared. The areas that you don’t do well on can help you chose the courses you’ll need while you’re still in high school.

Although it may seem like college is too far in the future to think about now, this is actually the best time to start planning. Your options are certainly wider at this point in your life.
